At our school, we believe that a strong praise culture plays a vital role in helping pupils to thrive both academically and personally. Staff consistently recognise effort, achievement, and positive behaviour, which helps pupils feel valued and motivated to do their best.
By focusing on what pupils are doing well, whether it’s excellent classwork, improvement in attitude, kindness towards others, or contributions to school life, we are creating an encouraging environment where everyone feels capable of success. This culture of praise boosts confidence, builds self-esteem, and inspires pupils to take pride in their learning. It also strengthens relationships between teachers and pupils, fostering mutual respect and a sense of belonging within the school community. Ultimately, our praise culture supports pupils in developing resilience, motivation, and a positive attitude that benefits them both in school and beyond.
There are many different ways pupils are regularly rewarded in school:
The Headteacher’s Award
The Headteacher’s Award is a special recognition given by the headteacher to pupils who have gone above and beyond in their learning, behaviour, or contribution to St Patrick’s school life. It celebrates those who consistently show effort, kindness, and a positive attitude, setting an excellent example for others. Receiving the Headteacher’s Award is a proud moment for pupils, as it highlights their hard work and commitment being noticed at the highest level. This award helps to inspire others to strive for excellence and reinforces the school’s values of respect, determination, and achievement.
Verbal Praise
Pupils regularly receive verbal praise and recognition in class and around the school to celebrate their effort, progress, and positive behaviour. Teachers use encouraging words to highlight good work or thoughtful answers. This helps pupils feel valued and motivated to keep improving. This immediate feedback builds confidence, strengthens teacher–pupil relationships, and creates a positive learning atmosphere where everyone feels encouraged to take part and do their best.
Praise Postcards
Praise postcards are a special form of recognition given out by all staff, teachers, and Pupil Engagement Officers to reward pupils for their outstanding effort, attitude, or achievements. Receiving a postcard is a meaningful moment because it shows that a pupil has been personally chosen by a member of staff for doing something exceptional. Whether it’s showing kindness, making great progress, or demonstrating the school’s values, being selected for a praise postcard highlights that their hard work has truly been noticed and appreciated. This makes the recognition feel personal and memorable, encouraging pupils to continue striving for excellence.
Reward Points
Reward points are added to Arbor to recognise pupils’ positive contributions and achievements in several key areas. Pupils can earn points for showing excellent effort in lessons, making strong progress, and through their involvement in the REACH programme. Each letter of REACH represents an important aspect of school life: R for Reading and developing literacy skills, E for Experiencing and impacting wider societal life as part of St Patrick’s community, A for Articulation and contributing thoughtfully through verbal participation, C for Catholic Life and actively living out the school’s faith values, and H for Helping others and showing kindness. These reward points celebrate pupils who demonstrate dedication, growth, and a commitment to the school’s ethos, encouraging everyone to take pride in their learning and character development.
PEO’s Star of the Week
Each week, the Pupil Engagement Officers select a pupil or group of pupils to be recognised as the Star of the Week during Celebration of the Word. This special recognition highlights those who have truly stood out through their effort, kindness, positive attitude, or contribution to school life. Being chosen as ‘Star of the Week’ is a meaningful honour, as it shows that a pupil’s actions have been noticed and appreciated by staff for making a difference in the school community. It encourages others to follow their example and reinforces the school’s values of respect, compassion, and excellence.
‘Names on Doors’
Around the school, pupils’ names are proudly displayed on staff doors to celebrate their effort, achievement, and positive attitude in lessons or around the school. Whether recognised by attendance staff, Pupil Engagement Officers, or teachers, this simple gesture allows pupils to see their hard work publicly acknowledged. It creates a sense of pride and belonging, as pupils can walk through the school building and see their names celebrated by different members of staff. This visible recognition helps to build a strong, positive praise culture, where success and effort are valued by everyone, and pupils feel encouraged to keep striving to do their best.
Subject Champion Displays
Each department in the school has a Subject Champion display to celebrate pupils who have shown outstanding effort, progress, or passion for that subject. Teachers work closely with their Curriculum Leads to carefully select just a few pupils from each year group to receive this recognition, making it a truly special achievement. Being chosen as a Subject Champion highlights a pupil’s dedication and commitment to learning, as well as their positive attitude within that department. These displays not only showcase individual success but also inspire others to work hard and take pride in their studies, strengthening the school’s overall culture of achievement and ambition.
Social Media Posts
Social media is used as a powerful platform to celebrate pupils’ successes and promote the school’s positive culture. Individual staff members and departments regularly post updates recognising pupils for their achievements, effort, and participation, as well as celebrating those who earn the highest reward points or succeed in the Form League. The Form League encourages teamwork and friendly competition, as form classes work together to earn points and move up to the Form Premier League. Sharing these successes online allows the whole school community – including parents and carers – to see and celebrate pupils’ hard work and commitment. This visible praise not only builds pride and motivation among pupils but also strengthens the connection between school and home, showing how effort and achievement are recognised and valued across the entire St Patrick’s community.
