Health & Social Care curriculum
About 3 million people work in health and social care. Health care roles include doctors, pharmacists, nurses, midwives and healthcare assistants, while social care roles include care assistants, occupational therapists, counsellors and administrators. Together, they account for nearly one in ten of all paid jobs in the UK. This course gives learners the opportunity to develop sector-specific knowledge and skills in a practical learning environment.
Pupils will explore different aspects of growth and development across the life stages using the physical, intellectual, emotional and social (PIES) classification. Pupils will explore the different factors that can affect an individual’s growth and development. Different health and social care services will be investigated and how they meet the needs of real service users. They also develop skills in applying care values. Pupils will come to understand the different types of health and social care services and barriers to accessing the services. The final unit of study focuses on factors that can have a positive or negative influence on a person’s health and wellbeing. Pupils will learn to interpret physiological and lifestyle indicators, and what they mean for someone’s state of health. and will learn how to use this information to design an appropriate plan for improving someone’s health and wellbeing, including short- and long-term targets.
