Physical Education Curriculum
“Sport is about what you can do, what you can achieve, the limits you can reach, the barriers you can break. Sport shows what is possible” – Lord Coe
Rationale:
At St Patrick’s we pride ourselves on a high-quality PE curriculum which is an entitlement for all pupils, regardless of their starting points or their prior experiences of sport and physical activity.
The national curriculum states: “A high-quality physical education curriculum inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically-demanding activities. It should provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness.”
In PE at St Patrick’s, pupils learn increasingly intelligent movement and important knowledge that can reduce barriers to participation and inform their own healthy, active lifestyle choices. PE provides a gateway into the world of sport and physical activity.
Implementation:
In KS3, starting with a wide ranging baselining, each strand of the national curriculum is introduced through basic skills, leading to development and towards mastery and coaching.
At the start of Year 7, every pupil is assessed through a series of different baseline activities covering team sports, individual sports, OAA, dance/movement and fitness. This is to assess pupils’ current performance levels. Throughout the rest of the key stage, a wide range of activities are taught in blocks of 6-10 lessons. Activities include Football, Basketball, Hockey, Table Tennis, Gymnastics, Volleyball, Dance, Dodgeball Athletics, Cricket, Rounders, and Softball.
At KS4, we look to embed a life long love and participation in sports and physical activity. Again throughout the key stage a wide range of activities are taught in blocks but concentrate more on a recreational and/or competitive nature. Activities include Football, Basketball, Handball, Table Tennis, Dance, Dodgeball Athletics, Rounders, and Softball.
KS4 BTEC Tech Award in Sport is offered to all pupils as a qualification subject.
How can the study of PE support pupils beyond school?:
PE equips pupils with the knowledge, habits, and values needed to lead healthy, active lives beyond school.
At St Patrick’s we promote physical fitness, resilience, and mental wellbeing, encouraging pupils to understand the importance of regular exercise and balanced lifestyles beyond school.
Team sports and physical challenges develop teamwork, leadership, communication, and problem-solving, skills highly valued in both the workplace and everyday life. At St Patrick’s, pupils have opportunities to bve sports leaders and coaches which develop these skills
The PE curriculum at St Patrick’s introduces pupils to career pathways in areas such as sport science, physiotherapy, coaching, fitness training, and teaching, while instilling a lifelong appreciation for sport and physical activity.
