Maths Curriculum

“Mathematics is the language with which God has written the universe.” – Galileo Galilei

Rationale:

Mathematics is central to the everyday life of us all. At St. Patrick’s Catholic College, we are committed to providing a curriculum in which all pupils can develop their existing Mathematical understanding as well as making links between Mathematics & other areas of the curriculum; & the world of work.

In essence, we aim to develop crucial skills for understanding and interacting with the world, alongside fostering critical thinking and problem-solving abilities. Mathematics provides a framework for logic, reasoning, and the ability to analyse and solve problems, making it essential for both personal and professional development.

Mathematics provides pupils with a foundation for understanding in areas such as patterns, structures and relationships within the world. It is integral for everyday life/tasks, including financial literacy, budgeting and navigating various situations. Mathematics is a cornerstone of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines, crucial for innovation and advancements. Mathematics cultivates the ability to think logically, reason systematically, and solve problems effectively.

At St Patrick’s Catholic College, we aim to develop fluency in fundamental mathematical concepts and skills, alongside a deeper understanding of underlying principles. We will focus on developing the ability to reason mathematically, apply concepts to solve problems, and communicate solutions clearly. Mathematics equips individuals with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in diverse fields, from STEM careers to financial and business sectors

.

We aim to foster a positive attitude toward Mathematics, encouraging curiosity and appreciation of its beauty and power.

Mathematics enhances theological thinking skills and language by cultivating critical thinking, logical reasoning, and precision in analysis, all of which are valuable for interpreting theological concepts and formulating arguments.

Implementation:

St Patrick’s Catholic College follows the National Curriculum throughout key stage 3 and key stage 4. We follow the White Rose Maths scheme which offers a comprehensive mathematics curriculum for both primary and secondary schools in the UK. The curriculum is designed to build strong foundations in mathematics, with a focus on fluency, reasoning, and problem-solving.

By the end of Key Stage 3, pupils using the White Rose Maths curriculum will have a solid foundation in various areas of mathematics, including number (fractions, percentages, decimals, and indices), algebra, (algebraic expressions, solving equations and inequalities including and working with sequences), geometry (shapes, constructions, congruence, similarity), ratio and proportion, statistics, and probability. Underpinning this is developing the ability to analyse complex problems and apply mathematical knowledge in real-life situation

In essence, White Rose Maths aims to equip pupils with a strong mathematical foundation and the skills needed to succeed in GCSE mathematics and beyond.

At the end of Year 11 pupils will sit a GCSE written by the OCR exam board. This will consist of two calculator papers and one non-calculator exam.

What enrichment opportunities do we offer in Maths?:

We offer a range of enrichment opportunities to inspire and support our pupils in Mathematics:

  • Targeted intervention sessions to boost confidence and close gaps in understanding
  • UKMT Junior and Intermediate Maths Challenges, encouraging high-level problem-solving
  • NPCAT Trust Maths Competition, promoting collaboration and healthy competition across schools
  • International Pi Day events, celebrating maths in creative and engaging ways
  • Darts Club, developing mental arithmetic and quick-thinking skills in a fun environment

How can the study of Maths support pupils beyond school?:

Mathematics provides pupils with essential life skills from problem-solving and logical reasoning to financial literacy and data interpretation. These skills support everyday tasks like budgeting, shopping, and planning, helping pupils lead confident, independent lives.

A strong foundation in maths also opens doors to further education, apprenticeships, and a wide range of careers. Professions such as finance, data analysis, software engineering, game design, and architecture all value the analytical and problem-solving abilities that maths develops.

Maths at St Patrick’s truly is a subject that empowers pupils both in school and beyond.

⚽️☘️Double delight for St Patrick’s Year 10 & 11’s☘️⚽️

Both our Year 10 and Year 11 boys football teams embarked on their ESFA journeys with trips to Darlington to play St Aidan’s with both teams being successful in reaching the next round of the competition.

The Year 10 team won with a 2 -0 victory with both goals coming from impressive striker Abdul A. The team were inspired by strong performances from key players Cyrus B, Archer T, Joseph B and skipper Josh H.

Our Year 11 boys were also successful facing a stern test against a determined St Aidans side. Felix O opened the scoring before a defensive mix up led to an equaliser for the home side. In a keenly contested game St Patrick’s skipper James H and Olly W scored the crucial goals to ease the team into the next round.

Well done to both teams who continue to represent the school with great pride and team work🤩
