St Patrick’s puts reading at the centre of our learning because we believe that reading unlocks opportunity. We believe – as research shows – that fluent, confident readers are better able to succeed academically, communicate well and engage fully with the world around them. Reading not only gives pupils access to the curriculum, but it also builds vocabulary and knowledge, therefore opening doors to future opportunities later in life.

Our aim is to cultivate a reading culture that:

• Ensures every pupil can read fluently, accurately and with comprehension;
• Promotes reading for pleasure and lifelong learning;
• Develops vocabulary and understanding to support success across all subjects;
• Embeds oracy and discussion to deepen understanding and engagement.

All teachers, in every subject, use reading age data to stretch or support pupils with their reading as they tackle increasingly difficult texts through their education journey.  Some pupils may need more support than others. As such, we may provide phonics, fluency, reciprocal reading or other interventions where needed.  All of our staff are trained in using robust, research-based approaches to reading.
